In 2003 when Holly and I purchased our first vineyard we made a promise to each other that we would be different, take risks and follow our dreams.
Our dream was to plant grape varieties that were not traditional to the Australian landscape. We were not going to be planting Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon, rather our path was going to be paved with varieties traditionally found in Southern Italy, Spain and Portugal. We would have never thought eighteen years later we would have over thirty different grape varieties growing in our vineyard, Ricca Terra Farms.
Have you ever woken to realise that all your determination, failures and passion have gifted you a unique and beautiful opportunity. That moment happened in 2017 when I left the comfort of working for a large wine business and created Ricca Terra Vintners (own new wine business). To have a vast array of Italian grape varieties to make both single variety and blended wines was a position not many other winemakers in Australia had at their feet. This was a pinch myself moment!
Albert Einstein once stated, ‘I have no particular talent. I am merely inquisitive’. Being inquisitive is how the brand Terra do Rio evolved (meaning Land of River). When we looked beyond Italy, we found Portugal. The question was asked, how would all the amazing traditional port varieties perform in our vineyard making table wines? And, once again, we found ourselves with a plethora of choices, such as Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Amarela, Tina Cão, Souzão and the list goes on! I found myself…again, at another pinch myself moment. We had actually created a vineyard (named the ‘Portuguese Paddock’) that was unlike any other in Australia.
One thing we are not is arrogant! We believe that there are moving and long lasting patterns in the climate having an impact on our farming practices. We know that traditional French varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon are loved by wine consumers all over the world. And we are certain that change is good and should be embraced. On a camping trip in the middle of South Australia, I observed a phenomenon called 22 Degree Halo, which is a band of tiny ice crystals that create a halo around the moon. It is thought that such an event is a sign of a change in weather. I wanted to create a wine that would introduce the grape varieties that we were passionate about and were climate adaptive with grape varieties that consumers felt safe with! The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d’Avola is our 22 Degree Halo red blend.
